Here at Michaelangelo’s Sustainable Landscape and Design Group, we’re all about creating beautiful landscaping that is easy to maintain and lasts for years. Sustainable is in our business’s name, and part of creating sustainable landscaping is choosing trees, shrubs, and other plantings that grow well in our Atlanta climate. In today’s blog post, we’re sharing a few of our favorite trees to plant here in our beautiful city. Southern Live Oak

The live oak has deep roots in the south — it’s Georgia’s state tree and planting a live oak is a beautiful choice for any green space. A mature live oak will provide you with shade for a lifetime, but it needs room to roam, so they’re not a good choice for small spaces. If you have a smaller yard, you can try a highrise oak, which will give you a similar look and shade, but with a smaller footprint.

Magnolia

Another iconic tree of the deep south, the magnolia is a stunning flowering tree that is a showstopper for any yard. There are more than 200 species of magnolia, and our landscaping company can point you towards trees that are native to our area. The bigleaf magnolia and pyramid magnolia are great choices. All magnolia trees give you large, fragrant pink, purple, red, or yellow blooms.

Crape Myrtle

Yet another stunning Southern classic, the crape myrtle produces large red, white or pink blooms. They’re drought-resistant and prefer full sun. The only downside is that this tree will drop its beautiful blooms in fall and cover your yard. But, if you hire Michaelangelo’s Sustainable Landscape and Design Group for lawn care, we’ll clean it right up for you!

Peach Tree

Dreaming of walking out into your yard and gathering a basket full of Georgia peaches? Our climate is perfect for this tree, but you need a space where they can get full sun so that they can avoid any winter frosts that might roll in.

River Birch

If you’re creating landscaping near water, like a riverbed or lake, a river birch could be a good choice. It can grow up to 90 feet tall and turns bright yellow in the fall. It’s native to the eastern U.S. and helps with our pollinator population, which means that not only do you have a beautiful tree, but you’ll also be doing your part to help our Atlanta wildlife!

Importance of Strategic Landscape Design

While you can pick up a tree at your local greenhouse and plant it yourself, we can’t overstate how important choosing the right location to plant is. Each tree has its own needs in terms of soil, water, and light. Plus, you need to account for how fast the tree grows, not only above ground but also its root system. A great landscaper will map out utility lines and make sure that future growth or a fallen branch won’t cause a power outage or foundation damage. When you choose our team for landscaping services, you can ensure that we’ll take every element into account to create a stunning, sustainable landscape.
