In our last blog post on seasonal turf care, we covered caring for your lawn during the two most important seasons of the year: spring and summer. But just because your lawn isn’t at its most lush in fall and winter doesn’t mean you should neglect it! Here in Atlanta, we’re lucky to have relatively mild winters, so you don’t have to prepare quite as much as if you lived in New England. But great lawn care is a year-round job, and our professional landscaping company is here to provide landscaping services every single month of the year.

Autumn is a crucial time to prepare your lawn for the colder months. Remember, what you do in the fall will allow you to reap the rewards in spring and summer, so don’t neglect these turf care duties!
Dethatching & Aeration
Just as you did in spring, fall is the time to remove thatch — the build up of branches, leaves, and grass. Fall generally produces the most thatch, and it’s especially important to take care of this before winter. Accumulation of materials will suffocate your lawn and trap moisture.
After dethatching, it’s time to aerate your lawn. Aeration involves creating small holes in your lawn to allow water and nutrients to reach the roots more easily. Our professional landscaping company is more than happy to come out and aerate your lawn whenever you need it.
Colder temperatures can cause your grass to turn brown, but if you seed in the fall, you can avoid that browning. If you didn’t overseed in the spring, take the opportunity to do so in the fall. You can try introducing more hardy grasses, and the goal is to get them established before winter sets in.
If you apply a slow-release fertilizer in the early fall, your grass is less likely to turn brown. Remember to never fertilize a dry lawn — the best time to apply fertilizer is after rain or watering.
There’s not much you can do to tend to your yard during winter. Proper lawn care during the other months, and especially during fall, are what will keep your yard healthy. However, there are a few tasks that you can take care of to upkeep your turf.
The primary lawn care for winter is weed control. Here in Atlanta, cool-season weeds can flourish while the summer heat is away. You can control these weeds with herbicides, and Michaelangelo’s Sustainable Landscape and Design Group would be more than happy to talk with you about your options, including eco-friendly herbicides.
Sometimes, the winter soil can become so hard that water doesn’t penetrate. Or, the winter is so dry that your lawn doesn’t stay moist. Either way, watering every so often is a good strategy to keep the soil moist and the roots of your grass healthy.
